DateJune 1932 - May 1933Collection Summary“Tavern Topics” is a monthly magazine issued by The Hongkong and Shanghai Hotels Limited “for the entertainment of patrons” and for “hotels at all ports connecting with Hong Kong”. The collection comprises 12 editions from the debut issue of June 1932 to May 1933, although the magazine ran till August 1940, when the war was closing in on Hong Kong.
The magazine content is largely Hong Kong-oriented, covering talks of the town, current and upcoming events, with feature articles about culture, traditions and people’s everyday life in Hong Kong and other parts of China. Regular columns include “Where to Go and What to See” providing sightseeing information in Hong Kong, “Kowloon” dedicating to report the latest development of the Kowloon Peninsula, and “Scenic Hong Kong” carrying photos taken around the colony. “Around the Hotels” offers a snapshot of personalities visited the hotels and major events such as Empire Day in 1933 taking place in the four HSH hotels in Hong Kong. The magazine also has sections for jokes, short stories, and sports.
Advertisers are mostly from Hong Kong, promoting cameras, drinks, couture and tailoring, art and craft, jewellery, and motor cars.
