“Clock Tower Reminiscences – Sketches of CLP’s Head Office” Published 「鐘樓憶舊－中電總部雜記」出版
The Hong Kong Heritage Project (HKHP) has launched a book entitled “Clock Tower Reminiscences – Sketches of CLP’s Head Office” at the Hong Kong Book Fair 2022.
The book tells the story of the power company’s headquarters at 147 Argyle Street from 1940 to 2012, which is affectionately known by many as “the Clock Tower”. It traces the origins and development of the building, as well as happenings in the local surroundings, in the context of the broader history of Hong Kong.
The research for the book is primarily based on HKHP’s archives which include reports, memoranda, meeting minutes, statistics, photographs, drawings and plans pertaining to the business interests of the Kadoorie Family in Hong Kong. The book also draws on HKHP’s extensive oral history collection – testimonies recorded over the course of more than a decade. These stories include recollections by those intimately associated with the building, such as CLP employees and tenants of St. George’s Mansions, as well as CLP shareholders, residents from the neighbourhood and those from the wider community. Together, these personal memories constitute the living heritage of “the Clock Tower”.
